Targeted modification of polyamide nanofiltration membrane for efficient separation of monosaccharides and monovalent salt

Separation of monosaccharides and monovalent salts is important in the biorefinery food industry. Nanofiltration (NF) technology promising for this purpose but its poor selectivity still needs to be addressed. In work, separation by NF improved regulating surface charge pore size distribution polyamide membranes. The carboxyl groups on membrane are selectively activated N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N?-ethyl carbodiimide (EDC) N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS), subsequently molecules with amino grafted reduce effective electronegativity. conditions optimized, polyethyleneimine (600 Da) selected as best enhancing glucose/fructose KCl. Such targeted modification found mean while maintaining porosity NF270 membrane, due segmentation. This results a remarkable improvement rejection (from 67.96% 84.14%) factor 2.20 6.78), only 4.70% permeability loss. modified also maintains performance crossflow filtration after alkaline cleaning (pH 12), which outperforms pristine those mussel-inspired coating simple physical adsorption. ?
